In order to address the recent concern about the decline in the number of students pursuing Information Technology courses in third level colleges, ChooseIT is an initiative aimed at enticing second level students to plan their futures in an IT context.
It is a campaign to demonstrate the opportunities that are available in the IT sector for rewarding, well-paid jobs with excellent prospects. ICS SKILLS wishes to boost the popularity of IT course in universities and colleges in this context.
The continued investment in Ireland as a premium location for IT companies is based on the high quality and skill of prospective employees.
For Second Level Students
ChooseIT provides a unique and novel approach by focussing on the second level students themselves. The key to attracting them to careers in IT is to emphasise the positive, and to dispel the misconceptions that many of them have in relation to the IT industry.
ICS SKILLS hopes to convince some of the students that they have the talents and aptitudes required for a successful and fulfilling career.
The chooseIT website will explode the myth of the IT professional having a boring desk bound job with no interaction other than with a PC. Rather, a modern IT professional is out and about, meeting people, negotiating deals, solving problems and contributing to the management of a modern technological society.
Today’s IT professionals work in a great variety of industries, and work in areas like graphic design, fashion, mobile phones, computer games, the police and e-commerce.
The principle medium for getting this message across to our second level students is the www.chooseIT.ie website. This has been designed with the interests of the students in mind, featuring regular competitions and polls, as well as sound information to inform their career choice.
Students can do self- assessment quizzes to determine their strengths and talents, and get tips on how to foster and develop them further. Different kinds of jobs in the IT sector are explored, and a range of job roles are outlined, each of which could be found in a variety of different industries.
To maintain the validity and authenticity of this, a series of real life profiles will be on view. These will be case studies of successful, real people, who recount the paths they followed to reach their current IT jobs.
